Pastor Alan Schaffmeyer of Trinity Lutheran Church and his wife Maryjeanne Schaffmeyer will leave Washington Island in mid-November of this year after Alan retires from the ministry. They would have enjoyed a goodbye party with shared potluck and hugs, but to be respectful of everyone’s health and safety, they are reflecting on their time here in an interview, they said.
Before coming to the Island, the Schaffmeyers were in Appleton, engaged in careers with substantial challenges. Alan explained the decision to move to the Island. “It was time for a big change. We prayed for an adventure.”
“It’s the Observer’s fault we’re here!” explained Maryjeanne, laughing. The Washington Island Observer did have a role in the events leading the Schaffmeyers to the Island: As the Schaffmeyers were considering their future after Appleton, John Poole, one of Maryjeanne’s co-workers and a part-time Island resident, approached her with a copy of the Observer, saying, “Your husband has to go to this church!”
