It’s common knowledge that Wisconsinites are hardy when it comes to winter weather. Islanders certainly demonstrated that on Feb. 13, when organizers and attendees braved single-digit temperatures, chilly winds and falling snow to attend the Winter Festival—Season of Lanterns fundraiser for fellow Islander Dan Nelson.
Nelson was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic melanoma recently and traveled to the University of Texas’s MD Anderson Cancer Center to seek treatment. Friends initiated a GoFundMe site and social media campaign to raise money for costs not covered by the family’s insurance.
Saturday’s event was held at the ballpark and Lion’s Club ice rink on Main Road. Beginning at 1 p.m.
Julian Hagen reported the event collected an estimated $5600 for Dan and hopes people will keep being generous, saying there are a few lanterns still up for grabs.
