In a decision that is being hailed county-wide as a success, the Washington Island town’s electorate approved repairing Mountain Tower during the town’s annual meeting Nov. 16. Over 70 were in attendance.
At the meeting, it was reported that the same engineer who inspected Potawatomi State Park’s tower assessed Mountain Tower and determined it could be repaired versus torn down and rebuilt, which is good news for what Town Board chairman Hans Lux said is a valuable Island asset. The goal is to reopen the tower by Memorial Day 2022, said Lux.
Mountain Tower and another major infrastructure expense led the board to ask voters for approval in securing a loan. At $273,000 with a 3% interest rate over ten years, $100,000 of the loan would pay for structural repairs on Mountain Tower.
